GreenWork stems from the life experience of
Julianne and Jennifer, two sisters from Elmira,
NY - a small city in the scenic and historic Finger
Lakes region.
The product of a multi-generational family
funeral business, “green work” was their
childhood name for the Victorian wood shingle
funeral home where their father and uncle
worked. Their art and craftwork reflects, in part,
the influences of mid-twentieth century
domesticity, small-town rural life, the persistence
of family memory, the role of covert matriarchy,
the cradle, and the grave. Their work may be
appreciated at the level of aesthetic stimulation
and/or practical utility, or at greater depths of
symbolism and meaning, as the viewer chooses.
